What Is General Dentistry?

Dr. Pendley and hygienist treating patient at The Dentists at DundeeGeneral dentistry refers to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of oral health problems. The services at our practice are one part of general dentistry. The other part is your at-home dental hygiene.

Your daily brushing and flossing helps you maintain clean teeth between dental appointments. Just like your overall health, your oral health starts with self-care. Practicing good oral hygiene at home is the first step in safeguarding your smile and staying healthy. General dentistry takes good oral hygiene a step further with professional dental cleanings and exams.

Services Our General Dentists Offer

We offer comprehensive general services, including:

General dentistry is the best line of defense for keeping your mouth – and the rest of you – healthy. Regular dental exams allow your dentist to watch for indications of poor nutrition, problems with development, or improper jaw alignment. Because so many health issues are related to your oral condition, you should be sure to let your dentist know of any health changes, even if they seem unrelated.

How Often You Should See the Dentist

Most people should see the dentist every six months. Under limited circumstances, your dentist may recommend more frequent visits. Such may be the case if you are experiencing a dental problem like gum disease. Sometimes women who are pregnant visit the dentist 2-3 times in a year if their pregnancy hormones are causing gingivitis. People living with cancer or diabetes may benefit from seeing the dentist more frequently. These diseases increase the risk of certain oral health problems.

During the cleaning, the dental hygienist will remove hardened deposits of plaque and tartar. They'll polish your teeth and gums, and they'll help you think about any dental symptoms you want the dentist to check out.

When the dentist performs the exam, they are looking for any signs of dental problems or changes in your mouth. They will also follow up on any symptoms or changes you report. The dentist assesses the findings on your x-ray, including screening for cavities. They monitor the health of your gums, looking for signs of recession, pockets between the gums and teeth, infection and inflammation. The dentist also looks for signs of oral cancer as part of your checkup, as well as signs of jaw joint pain or bite problems.

Our goal is to make sure your mouth and teeth feel comfortable, and that we are helping you prevent dental problems and dental disease. Working from a foundation of great dental health, we can help you decide if you want to also improve the aesthetics of your smile with cosmetic dentistry. But we always want to start by getting your oral health in tip-top shape.

Signs You Should Call the Dentist

If you notice a troubling symptom or change in between your routine checkups, don't hesitate to call us. We can help you decide if a non-routine appointment is necessary. Contact us if you notice any of the following:

  • Painful or aching tooth or teeth
  • Painful or aching jaw
  • Tooth sensitivity to hot and/or cold
  • Chronic bad breath that doesn't go away
  • Lasting and recurring dry mouth
  • Swollen, tender gums that bleed easily
  • A sore in your mouth that isn't going away
  • A broken, damaged or dislodged filling, crown or other restoration

While some of these issues can probably wait until your next checkup, we can help you decide if any of them are more urgent.

7 Tips for Better Oral Health

Here are some ways you can improve the health of your teeth, gums and entire mouth:

  1. Brush correctly. There is actually a correct way to brush! Choose a soft-bristled toothbrush (medium and hard bristles are typically too rough on your gums and teeth enamel). Brush with the brush head at a 45-degree angle to your gums. Gently brush back and forth, remembering to brush not only the chewing surfaces, but also the inner and outer surfaces of your teeth. Brush 2-3 times per day, for 2 minutes each time.
  2. Choose the right toothbrush, and know when to ditch it. You should buy a new toothbrush about every 3-4 months, or when you see the bristles are getting frayed and worn.
  3. Don't forget to floss! Floss thread removes the food debris and plaque lodged in between your teeth. Toothbrush bristles can't reach these nooks and crannies, so it's really important to floss once a day, every day. Use about 12-18 inches of floss so you have a clean section for each tooth. Gently guide the floss up and down between teeth, curving it around the base of the tooth where the margin of gum is.
  4. Choose foods that are good for your oral health. Like your overall health, your dental health benefits from fresh or frozen fruit and vegetables, protein, calcium and nutrients. Highly processed food and added sugar tend to be bad for your dental health and contribute to tooth decay. Food that stimulates saliva production will help to rinse plaque out of your mouth. Good options include crisp apples, celery, carrots, strawberries and cheese.
  5. Rinse, then brush, after eating. Your tooth enamel is particularly sensitive right after eating. Your tooth enamel will firm up again and re-mineralize about half an hour after eating. To remove food debris, rinse with water. If you want to brush, wait at least 30 minutes after eating so that the bristles won't abrade the sensitive enamel.
  6. Don't smoke. Smoking is bad for your whole body, including your short-term and long-term health. Not only does it increase your risk of cancer, stroke, heart attack, coronary heart disease and other health problems, it is also bad for your gums and teeth. Smoking and chewing tobacco increases the odds of gum disease, tooth stains, tooth loss and oral cancer.
  7. Enjoy water, not soda. Frequent soda consumption leads to tooth decay and cavities. Enjoy soda in moderation.

When you visit our dentists, they will provide custom tips tailored to your oral health concerns.
